Why do the Gospels Routinely Contradict Each Other?

Responding to a caller, Rabbi Tovia Singer explains why there are numerous significant and irreconcilable contradictions between the Gospel accounts in the New Testament.  After all, although both the author of Matthew and Luke were familiar with the book of Mark, they differed dramatically with his accounts about Jesus and his disciples.  What motivated these New Testament writers to sharply contradict each other?
