Why Did David’s Newborn Baby Have to Die After God Forgave the King?

The prophet Nathan was dispatched to the king’s palace to confront David about his public sin with Bathsheba; God was furious with the king. “I sinned before the Lord,” responded David as he was made aware of his grave sin. Nevertheless, Nathan declared that “the son born to you will die.” Rabbi Tovia Singer responds to an often-asked question: If David was truly forgiven, why did his newborn son have to die?
