Was Jesus Really Nailed to a Cross?

All Christians presume that the limbs of Jesus were nailed to the cross.  This picture of Jesus’s ghastly crucifixion is the most familiar image that emerged from the church.   As it turns out, there is considerable debate as to whether anyone was ever nailed to a cross during the Roman Empire.  Why then does the Book of John emphasize this feature of Jesus’s crucifixion while the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke ignore this description completely?  Rabbi Tovia Singer’s answer will surprise you.
